    Hello Mom,

Can you tell me how you organize chores for your tribe of 7?

      Hi Rhonda!
Great question. The simple answer, just start making a list. Make a dream list of everything you would like done on a weekly or daily basis, within your home. Do you want the carpets vacuumed? Do you want your kitchen floor “swiffered” after each dinner. Do you want the dishwasher unloaded every morning or night? Do you want someone to gather all the trash in the house, every week, and take it out to the BIG trashcan? Might you want someone to take to the street and retreive the BIG trashcans every week?

The SKY is the limit. Make your list. Then sit back and factor in the age of your children and how many you have. I don’t think chores should take more than 15 or 20 minutes per child each day. And honestly, I don’t think kids should have chores EVERY day. I do think each child should have a chore that “stretches” them—stretches their abilities.

(For our older girls they had to learn how to cook and now I can rely on them to cook one night a week. No, it’s not a gourmet meal, but it’s a meal and it’s a HUGE help)

Once you have the list of chores, make a list of the days of the week and start populating the chores by the day.

Sit the kids down and tell them this is going to mean that when they get home from school, they need to give YOU a little of THEIR time, but there’s a reward—they get paid. You decide how much. I would suggest you direct deposit the money, weekly, into their savings accounts. Then together, you guys can watch the money grow.

There, of course, will be teachable moments: the chores don’t get done, they get done really poorly or the little workers organize a strike. (joking…a strike has yet to happen in our house) But for the most part, after about 2 weeks, the kids will settle into this new routine, won’t ask a lot of questions about it any more and the best part?

YOU WILL BE ONE HAPPY MOM!!!!!

Good luck. Let me know how it goes!
